🧭 Why Visit

Greek temples in better condition than most in Greece, the Concordia's complete colonnade glowing gold at sunset above almond groves and the African sea. Go late afternoon into the illuminated evening; the light is the second monument.

🏛️ A Little History

Akragas was among the richest cities of the Greek world, and Pindar called it the most beautiful of mortal cities. Its fifth century BC temple row survived because the Concordia became a church in 597 AD while its siblings fed earthquakes and quarries.

💡 Did You Know?

The Concordia is one of the best preserved Greek temples anywhere largely thanks to that conversion, and the fallen Icarus lying inside it is a modern bronze by Igor Mitoraj that photographs like an ancient casualty. February brings almond blossom to the ruins.
